A voluminous early writer in the Mormon faith, he is best known for his A Comprehensive History of the Church, a major landmark in LDS historical writing. His histories and biographies and treatises remain among the important works of Mormon literature.

Baptized in Utah in 1867 following his immigration from England. He taught school and did some work as a journalist. In 1888 he was called into the First Council of the Seventy; in 1889 he spent four months in prison for \"unlawful cohabitation.\" Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Roberts was denied his seat because of his polygamist beliefs. He eventually became one of the seven presidents of the First Council of the Seventy.
