During the Vietnam war, an American soldier named Daltridge finds himself taking part in secret bombings in Cambodia. His plane is shot down and, in order to survive, he violently accosts a man and steals his boat. Daltridge then makes it back to camp and home from the war. Initially troubled by his actions, he eventually stops thinking about the war as he serves in higher and higher church callings. Although he has never addressed the atrocity he committed, he believes himself innocent of wrongdoing. He is unbothered by thoughts of the war until ghosts from his past reappear in his life while he is speaking to the saints in Asia.
