Maggie is out of place when she moves to Oakville to teach high school. But it isn't long before the boys are asking her to dance. She meets Ira Scott, who is usually so serious but smiles around Maggie. He asks if she will accompany him up the mountain for a barbecue. Maggie and Ira fall in love throughout summer and winter and are engaged on Christmas. After a year of marriage they have a new baby, but Ira's pride is getting in the way of love, and Maggie feels alone. He leaves to help people in a blizzard and she is scared he won't be able to return. She waits fearfully for Ira to come back through the blizzard. Weeks pass. She begins to think he will never come back because he doesn't love her anymore. But on Christmas Eve, he makes it to the house and tells Maggie that he has been afraid of expressing how he feels because he might lose her, but now he realizes his mistake. They have a very happy Christmas together.
