After getting married and moving to a new town, Ruth befriends a young boy and helps him make a garden box for his mother for Christmas. His mother, unaware of the Christmas gift, resents all the time the boy spends with Ruth instead of in his own home. On Christmas Eve, the boy goes hiking to find an evergreen plant to put in the box but gets stuck and can't get home on his own. Ruth goes in search of him and brings him home safely, an act that softens his mother's feelings toward her.
