Edith develops narcolepsy after the death of her teenage son, purportedly as a physiological means of suppressing her grief. She had been adamant about her son not playing high school football, but he and his father won out and he became a football star. After an illegal hit caused internal damage that wasn't treated fast enough, he passed away and Edith started falling asleep at unpredictable times. She finds the ironic circumstances of her son's death almost comically ridiculous.
