Brother Nelson and Brother Jones teach Herbert Melbourne, a well-educated skeptic, about the gospel using logic. Herbert becomes intrigued by the idea of religion as a science or philosophy, and he asks many questions about the existence of God, the form of God, baptism, and revelation. After he begins attending church meetings and paying tithing, he proposes to a woman in the ward and is called on a mission to Great Britain. He learns the stories of the other missionaries he travels with. Herbert experiences miracles and discusses doctrine with a minister. Herbert tells of Jim Brierly's return home from his mission. Finally, Herbert returns home and marries his fiancée.
