Irene feels like an outsider when they move into her husband’s childhood home with Dick’s grandfather, aunt Ella, and Dick’s mute younger brother, Davy. As they clean the dirt and grime away from the house, Irene worries if Davy will ever accept her, as he runs anytime she’s near. However, when she gets him a small picture book about babies to help him prepare for when she had her baby, a bridge is built between the two of them. When Irene brings baby Kathy home, Davy says his first word since his mother dies: baby.
