Salt Lake City, Utah: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mutual Improvement Association, August 1924
Fiction, Short Story
Betty is left with no options when her parents die and she loses her work. Her wealthy aunt offers to house her if Betty takes up acting, but Betty refuses. Instead, Betty finds work in the bonnet shop of a family friend, Madam Gibson. Eventually Madam Gibson develops cataracts, and Betty writes to her aunt for money for Madam Gibson to have surgery. A lawyer shows up to tell Betty that her aunt has died and Betty will receive the inheritance only if she takes up acting, but Betty still refuses. Her aunt then comes, revealing that this was a ruse to learn more about Betty's convictions and Christianity. Her aunt gives Betty the needed money, studies the Bible, and supports Betty and Madam Gibson in their shop.
