Ted Booth, a twelve-year-old herdboy, is captured by two Sioux and held for months. One day he manages to ride away from the camp on a horse, and he tries to outrace his pursuers. When he sees them attempting to cut him off, he prays for strength, and he and his horse are reinvigorated, managing to ride past the Native Americans and into town.
