Among the Nephites, the Christians are sentenced to die by the unbelievers if the sign foretold by Samuel the Lamanite of Christ's birth does not appear. The prophet Nephi and his sister, Velma, are waiting for the sign when Gidgiddoni, a soldier and Velma's lover, visits them. Although he is an unbeliever, he is willing to help some of the Christians escape; however, Nephi and Velma turn down his offer and have faith that God will give a sign and save the believers. When the sign does come, Gidgiddoni realizes he was wrong and worships God with Nephi and Velma.
