Salt Lake City, Utah: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mutual Improvement Association, April 1921
Fiction, Short Story
Three men—a newspaper writer, an artist, and their guide—visit the Rio Grande. The guide, Mitchell, explains that he can understand the river the same way he can understand other aspects of nature or understand music. He talks about how the Rio Grande feels alive and seems to have a sense of humor and justice. He tells a story of when he guided a group of Latter-day Saints who were being hunted by Mexican marauders. They were trapped at the Rio, which was rapid and flooding. However, the Latter-day Saints prayed, and the river dried up completely, allowing them to escape safely.
