The narrator and his friend Reuben drive past the old church building that is slated for demolition. Both express sadness, though the narrator doesn't understand why Reuben, who hasn't been to church in years, would be sad to lose the building. Reuben's son undergoes triple by-pass surgery and, facing his imminent death, feels no regret for the wild way he lived his life. Reuben, on the other hand, has "the guilties" and begins to turn his life around. He is eventually able to go to the temple and regain his hope of being with his wife in the next life.
