Dan Dunbar says goodbye to his friend Alice Maury before leaving for school in the east. On the train ride there, Alice's faither, Dr. Maury, warns him that the schools out east don't have the religious influences of the schools in Utah, and that Dunbar will have to wear a "coat of mail" to resist temptation, and that he shouldn't even get close to the edge of sin. Dunbar follows this advice, refusing to drink and smoke and refusing the advances of a woman. He comes home pure and clean, and he thanks Dr. Maury for his advice.
