When Philip Pemberton saves Margaret Benton in an alley, he strikes up a friendship with her and her upper-class family. He starts to fall in love with her, but he doesn't have the courage to admit that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He introduces the gospel to the family, but when they find out he is LDS, they react angrily. Eventually they try to convince him to give up his religion, and when he refuses, Margaret sees how important it is to him and decides to learn how to say that she is a member of the Church with the same pride Philip does.
