Fiction, Short Story
Ralph Swinburne is worried when he learns that his old friend, Robert Le Noir, is coming back home from years abroad. He admits to Robert that he pretended that Robert was dead so that he could marry Robert's girlfriend, Marah. Angered, Robert revokes their friendship and leaves to stay with a widow and her daughter, and he investigates Ralph's business to try to discredit his former friend. He finds that Ralph had made bad investments with the money entrusted to him, and Ralph, upon losing his money and reputation, leaves a letter for Marah telling the whole truth and that he is now going to commit suicide. Marah begs for Robert's help in saving Ralph, and Robert goes to Ralph and tells him he forgives him and wants to renew their friendship. Robert feels at peace knowing that by forgiving his enemy, he can ask for forgiveness from God.
