LaRue Harding had always intended to come visit her sister in Arizona, but the time had never seemed right until it was too late. Amelia had been killed in a car accident that had left her husband, Herb, crippled. Initially, when LaRue comes out to help, Herb’s three children are hostile. It’s not until she suggests a picnic at the old Harding house that she starts to win their love and trust. Together, they work on restoring the old house, wanting to turn it into a museum. She meets Dr. Alan, who is engaged, but LaRue can’t help to feel attracted to him. Dr. Alan performs a surgery that restores the nerves to Herb’s lower body, and he begins to walk again. However, eventually LaRue’s vacation ends, and she must return to work in San Francisco. Dr. Alan follows her to the bus stop, and confesses his love for her, his fiancé having called off their engagement. LaRue decides to stay in Arizona.
